Our History
The Perú Fund was founded in 1991 by Dorthe Hviid and Evie Reda who met in Lima, Peru in 1990, where they spent a number of months each adopting a child. Developing a strong feeling of connection to their children’s heritage, they sought to find a way to help relieve the extreme poverty they witnessed there. With this goal in mind, they began to establish connections with people who were doing humanitarian aid work in the area.
One of the connections they made there led them to André Franche, the executive director of Wings of Hope, a small NGO, which is headquartered in Montreal, Canada. Wings of Hope focuses on building clean water projects in remote rural areas of Peru. Their field partner, Alas de Esperanza Perú, has their main office in Lima, Peru.
After contributing to a variety of humanitarian projects in Peru, Dorthe and Evie came to believe that the most basic and effective way to support poor communities was to help them gain access to clean water.
Over the years, the trustees of the Perú Fund have on several occasions visited the projects in Peru that we have contributed to, and found that they are well managed and functioning well.
The administrative costs of the Perú Fund itself are covered 100% by trustee donations.
